In Ibn Khaldun's experience, a "town" was hardly comparable to what we consider a town or city. Cf. the introduction to this translation, 1:lxxvii, above. Residents of towns, as Ibn Khaldun uses the word, may have owned "real estate," i.e., houses, plots, gardens, etc., and "farms" in their town.
